A New Year!

A new year is here. With that, thousands of hobbyists dust off the armies on the shelf and make resolutions about getting it painted, going to tournaments, building new lists, starting a podcast, etc.

So I will too!

So first off, it's model updates. I needed to get warmed up and chose a lonely metal Plaguebearer to paint. Easy enough, and now he can count as a Herald in my Nurgle army.

I got tired of hearing the incessant chanting coming from my Beasts of Nurgle and started on them next. Got one close to being finished. These are harder to paint IMO. I'm not sure if I'll ever run them on the board but at least it's given me a good go with some paint.

So now some resolutions for this year. Most exciting for me is that my girlfriend wants to start an army! We used to play Warhammer Fantasy all the time back in the day as friends so she's got cred. I love that she has chosen the berserk hordes of Khorne as her force (this is SO her). I have a lot of  Khorne models already so getting her an up and running Daemonkin army shouldn't take too long. Just gotta invest in some Bloodthirsters for that cutie.

To get playing more, I gotta have a table. I was waiting for my landlord to clear some space in a loft here but it never happened so my plan is to build another one for my apartment. I'll keep it to 6X4 so it's easier to manage and store. I  will get on building it this week, as I'm have serious withdrawals from lack of playing on a regular basis. It makes me sad.

So, work on Nurgle army, help gf build Daemonkin force, build table (and paint my damn terrain finally), updater blog more, and have fun doing it. Here's to a productive 2016!

Plaguebearer progress

It was time to stop buildin', and start paintin', so I grabbed all my Plaguebeaers that had previously been built for my Fantasy army, and got to work over a rainy weekend.

These guys are really easy to paint up, and a lot of fun too; especially once you get into painting the rotten parts like the sores and guts. GW washes really go a long way here.

I added the usual gloss varnish to the sticky parts and will probably add a few more layers once they're dry. The weapons were just some Typhus Corrosion followed by a drybrush of orange to make them look rusted up.

The older metal models will be used as Plagueridden, Icon, or Instrument bearers. Still have some details to paint up on them and to finish the bases, but almost done!

Building a better Great Unclean One

I did it. I couldn't hold out any longer. I decided not to wait for a new GUO model and will convert up one for use in both Fantasy and 40k!

The current little GUO is a wee guy now, what with the release of the new Bloodthirster kit. That boy is huuuuge! There is only one kit out there now that encompasses the size and girth of a Greater Daemon of Nurgle, and that is the Glottkin.

I just happened to get one in the mail the other day, so it's time to assemble! It's a really nice kit, not too complicated to put together at all. It will have some nice leftover bitz to use as well, especially the two Chaos Sorcerer riders.

So my idea for the Daemon is to use the main body of course, with a litle bit of manipulation of the head. I love the detail of the face, but I need to make him more "mine" and will be adding a single eye and horn. I think this will make him a little more Unclean. That face though, so cute only a Nurgling could love it.

Don't hate him cause he's beautiful!

So far I have assembled the legs and lower torso. Talk about cankles!

I have a few more pieces to go on the torso, and then it's onto the arms and head. One thing I do not want to do with this guy is to just cut the back parts off and use him as a GUO. I plan on changing him up, mostly through the head and arms. I like the arms that come with him, but I'm thinking of making him holding a weapon, like maybe a big Nurgly looking axe or something. The "maw" arm will not be used, much as I like the nasty thing. Tonight I will scour my bitz for something that will fit the scale of the model. If not, I'll do some searching on Ebay or something.

On a couple of side notes, this dude took a tumble off my work area, and I had to reassemble him. I love this model!

I also got my work area finished up with some artwork hung. Mainly some D&D prints and some old art I did back in the day of...D&D stuff. Add in some Star Wars and I have immersed myself in nerdom.

Can't go wrong with Holloway, Dee, and Roslof!

Nurgly Wurlgy

I'm not dead! I feel happy!

So, I have been looking at the new Khorne Daemonkin stuff, and I really like what I see. GW rewarding the faithful with a mono-god codex for Chaos is uber-cool. I'm a fluff purist at heart, so I have always loved pure Khorne or Nurgle forces in the past. With the last two Chaos codexes, you sorta had to play some mixed stuff to stay competitive though. I didn't feel too bad about combining Nurgle and Slaanesh (the pink and stink list) or Nurgle and Khorne (pus and....ahh fuck, nothing rhymes). I can't wait to see a Nurgle Daemonkin book, and I think that's the one I'd like to build going forward.

Well, having said that, I need something to distract me from all this Khorny goodness, at least for now. I'm getting back into the swing of things, have my work area all done up, and will be setting up a gaming table soon out above the barn (I live on a horse farm now). It's time to jump back on the horse! (see what I did there?). A good warm up for painting would be my Fantasy Nurgle Daemon army.

I've had most of it built for a while now and absolutely love the models. They are pretty easy to paint up too. Only thing I'd love to build for it would be a proper Great Unclean One and maybe a Daemon Prince or two. With all the awesome Nurgle stuff released for End Times recently, there's definitely some good models to make some conversions out of.

Sign of a good Warhammer unit...easy to rank up!

I love these counts as Beasts of Nurgle and can't wait to get them finished!

Fantasy is about to make a comeback and I'm excited to see what direction it goes. And you know what? If it sucks, I'll have a fully painted army to move and that'll be that. I recently sold off my Orks and Ogres, so I have no qualms about scaling back my armies as I go forward. Don't get me started on the Skitarri, I love almost all the models coming out for them. Be disciplined, Brandon...stay on target...

Sorry Skeletor, you're just gonna have to wait!

First game of 7th

New Edition! Get it??

Got in a quick 1000 Point game of 7th Edition on Saturday. It was (non-spam) Chaos Daemons vs. Tau. I used my usual "Pink and Stink" list.

Nurgle Daemon Prince - Psycher 2 and Wings
10 Plaguebearers
10 Plaguebearers
20 Daemonettes - Full command
20 Daemonettes - Full command
Nurgle Grinder - Phlegm

Commander in Crisis Suit
1 Crisis Suit
10 Fire Warriors
10 Fire Warriors
5 Pathfinders
Hammerhead
Riptide

We played the Maelstrom of War: Cleanse and Control mission. We set up with a Dawn of War Deployment to keep it simple. This is the mission with the six Objectives set across it. This let us use the Tactical Objective Cards, which were pretty interesting.

We both forgot to roll for Warlord Traits. NEWBS!

He had first turn and I failed to Seize. I had most of my stuff hidden pretty well so I wasn't too concerned with him getting first round shooting. I only had the DP, Plaguebearers and the Grinder on the board and all of them had cover in ruins or behind buildings.

His first round shooting was pretty quiet. Riptide and Hanmmerhead maneuvered around to get some shots off but the ungodly Nurgle cover saves made them ineffective. Things got more interesting when he started playing his Objective Cards. He picked up three points right off the bat for securing the numbered ones on his side of the board. Some lucky card pulls will really swing games now. It made him jump over with his Riptide to grab one, but that put him a little too far forward of his lines.

My first round was good. I flew the DP forward, eyeing that Riptide. The Comedy Table was good to me, got a +1 to all my invulnerable saves. I got a lucky ricochet shot on his Commander with the Grinder's Phlegm, and insta-killed him from it being Strength 8. This in turn made the other Suit retreat which took it out of the game. That put a huge dent in his firepower. I got First Blood and Kill the Warlord. No Objective Card points for me.

Second Round I got shot at some more, and he grabbed more points by playing close Objective Cards. I was starting to fall behind. The cards are great for pulling you out of the old static game of waiting until the end rounds to hold objectives; they make you move now, which will change the dynamic of this game for sure.

My Second Round I went into Glide mode with the DP and grabbed a few Objectives with the Plaguebearers. I got one unit of Daemonettes down too, and they came on in front of the Fire Warriors, which is always awesome. Not. I forgot I could pull the second unit down with them with their Instrument. That would have helped saturate him a little instead of serving up one unit piecemeal. The Comedy table gave me nada this round, rolled a 7. The DP then charged the Riptide and whiffed it's to wound rolls (!). At least it couldn't shoot next round. My Balesword should finish it off.

Third Round sees the Fire Warriors blasting away at the poor Daemonettes, reducing them down to like four models. The Hammerhead continues shooting but keeps missing. He grabbed a few more points with the Cards as well. Combat sees the DP kill the Riptide. With most of the big shooting threats gone things should get better.

My Third Round the DP jumps off towards the Fire Warriors, ready to die in a hail of pulse beams. The other Plaguebearer unit reaches an Objectives and sits, and my other Daemonette unit comes down to camp on an Objective on his side of the board, protected by a building. Not a glorious job for them, but the possibility of Card points and Linebreaker is too good to pass up. I get lucky on the Comedy Table and roll a 12, giving me 10 free Daemonettes to drop in behind the Fire Warriors. I'm giving him bad choices now, shoot either them or the DP coming in from the flank. Either way, something will get to them next round. The Grinder continues to pump Phlegm at the Fire Warriors, knocking off a few here and there each round. I'm not bringing him out of those ruins.

Fourth Round and the Fire Warriors blast the DP down to one wound, with the Hammerhead finishing him off. Smart move, he gets Slay the Warlord doing that. Nothing much for him as his army is slowly being whittled down.

My Fourth Round gets me the game. The free Daemonettes charge the Fire Warriors and Pathfinders. Comedy table does basically nothing. I pull Objective Cards that gain me a bunch of points for holding stuff. Next round the Daemonettes charge the Hammerhead and glance it to death, gaining some more. I think the final score was fairly close, like 12-8.

So how did we like 7th? Overall, I dug it. The main thing that stuck out to me was the Objective Cards. It kept the game moving and interesting. If you get a Card, you have to find the balance of jumping for points if Objectives are close and protecting your stuff. Cheap Troops to move up the board hunting for them as they appear may be the answer to that, if you army has access to them. There were a few small tweaks here and there that may have come up during the game, but were minimal enough for us not to notice. One I was prepared for was having to wound Flying Monstrous Creatures to force grounding tests. No more marker light to the face of my Daemon Prince!

Anyone else try out 7th yet?

Tallymen of Nurgle

I've been super busy lately, and haven't gotten my Hammer on at all, neither building, painting, or playing. I did get a chance tonight to base up some Plaguebearers though. Something about a fully ranked up unit just warms the heart...

Unit Standard Bearer

I used an older OOP metal Plaguebearer for the unit Plagueridden.

More Nurgle Daemons

Progress on some of my Fantasy army this week. It's been fun working on it, not to mention a nice break from round bases.

This is the second Beasts of Nurgle unit. More of the same with some slight conversions to separate it from the other unit. Had to use some river troll and spawn arms as I'd used the weapon arms on my Great Unclean One already.

Next up is Nurgle's favorite Tallyman, Epidemius. He's made from an old metal Plaguebearer command model and rides a Necromunda giant ray thingy as a counts as palanquin. I've always loved that model and had to find a way to use it. I added a big, over the top gut to him to really up the gross level.

I made this Herald of Nurgle Standard Bearer using another old metal Plaguebearer. The head comes from the Grey Knight kit (it's skewered by a power sword) and I had to add half of the face back to him.

Lastly is a unit filler for one of my Plaguebearer units I cleaned up with some green stuff. Those little nurglings end up in the darnedest places!

More WIP Plaugebearers

Feel the Nurgle love!

Got a few more done; the unit is almost complete. I'm going to add a Nurgly symbol to the Icon Bearer and clean up a few areas on them with some highlighting and washes. I started using some purple wash on these and it shades the guts nicely.

I'm seriously contemplating doing a big ol' conversion of a Great Unclean One next. My luck is as soon as I do it, they'll announce new Greater Daemons are being released, not unlike the Plague Zombie kit which is coming soon. We shall see.

WIP Plaguebearers

I've been busy as of late but got a little time to do some test Plaguebearers over the weekend. I was at a WWII reenactment late last week but got home pretty early on Sunday, so I had a little time to work on these.

The bases are definitely not done, and I still have some highlighting to do on the minis as well.

I based them white, then put a coat of Ogryn Camo followed by a good wash of Sewer Water. Then some highlights of lighter green and they're about done. I used some Typhus Corruption and Ryza Rust on the blades as well.
